It looks like Carson Jones might have to wait a little longer for the biggest fight of his boxing career. Jones was scheduled to face former world champion Antonio Margarito in the co-main event of the Manny Pacquiao and Joshua Clottey card on March 13 at Cowboys Stadium. However, issues pertaining to Margarito’s license are being sorted out after he was suspended for a year due to an illegal substance pertaining to his wraps against Shane Mosley at the end of January of 2009.
While Margarito has successfully sat out his suspension, the California State Athletic Commission will revisit his situation and talk about the possibility of reinstating the license on February 22. If Margarito is approved, he will face Jones tentatively on May 8 as a part of a Top Rank show in Aguascalientes, Mexico.
“When anyone gets a chance to fight on a major card with Manny Pacquiao and Joshua Clottey in front of millions of fans at Cowboys Stadium, it is the biggest moment in a fighter’s career because it is a chance to make a big impression, “ said Jones. “So when I got the news that the fight was off, I was extremely disappointed and upset.”
“However we are tentatively scheduled for May 8 and I am going to get ready.”
James Gogue, Jones’s trainer, said that he is going to continue to get Carson ready and the extra time off actually works in his benefit.
“We have 12 weeks to prepare and my plan is to get Carson in excellent shape,” said Gogue. “Also the time off will help him because he had at least nine fights in 2009 and was very active.”
“Also he just came off a fight January 28th against Eloy Suarez, which was a tune up fight before the big one. However the fight is still on and may the best man win.”
